MSP Content Marketing

What This Is

Content marketing is the process of creating and sharing valuable free content to attract and convert prospects into clients. For an MSP, this is the most powerful way to build "the bridge of trust."

Before someone hires you to manage their entire company's security, they need to know that you actually know what you're talking about.

Why It Matters for MSPs

The goal of content is not to show off how smart you are; it is to solve a small problem for the prospect so they trust you to solve the big ones.

Good content answers the questions your prospects are already asking: "Is my business at risk of ransomware?" "What's the best way to move to the cloud?" or "How do I choose the right IT provider?"

Getting Started

Solving, Not Selling

The best content is educational, not promotional. If every blog post or video ends with a hard sell, people will stop consuming it. Instead, focus on providing genuine value.

If you teach a business owner how to spot a phishing email, you've earned more trust than any sales pitch ever could. You are positioning yourself as a teacher and a partner, not just a vendor.

Example: "Blue Ridge Tech" in Asheville noticed many prospects were confused about Windows 10 end-of-life. They wrote a 500-word "Windows 10 Sunset Guide for Small Businesses" and shared it in a local business Facebook group.

It received 15 shares and led to 3 phone calls from owners worried about their old hardware.

The Core Content Formats for MSPs

You don't need to be a professional writer or filmmaker. Start with what you're comfortable with. Blog posts are great for SEO; short videos are great for trust and social media; and "checklists" or "guides" are excellent for capturing leads.

The most important thing is that the content is clear, jargon-free, and directly relevant to the business owners in your market.

FOR MSP OWNERS SPECIFICALLY

Don't reinvent the wheel. If you answer a client's question in an email or a meeting, that's a content idea. If you fix a common problem for a client, that's a content idea. Use your daily work as the source of your educational material.

Actionable Content Basics

  1. List 10 Questions your Clients Ask. These are your first 10 pieces of content. Answer each one simply and thoroughly in a blog post or short video.
  2. Create one "Lead Magnet." This is a high-value resource (like a "Cybersecurity Audit Checklist") that someone can download in exchange for their email address. This is how you turn "finding" into "nurturing."
  3. Commit to one piece of content per month. Don't overwhelm yourself. Consistency is more important than quantity. One high-quality, helpful article per month is enough to build significant authority over a year.

Teach instead of pitch, and by the time the sales conversation happens the prospect already trusts you. That call gets easier, and it happens far more often.

Workbook: Try This Now

Identify your first pillar content topic before you write anything

Content marketing works by answering the specific questions your prospects are already searching for. The right first topic is the question your best clients asked most before signing — not the topic that feels most impressive.

Which best describes your current content publishing situation?
What format fits how you actually want to create content?
What topic do your best clients ask about most often, before or after signing?
